    RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

    1987-1992: Studied the role of endotoxin-induced inflammation in the proliferation of all pulmonary cell types in rats. Studied epithelial cell adhesion mechanisms and the anatomy of the airway epithelium in a variety of species. Studied alveolar Type 2 cells and macrophages in vitro (University of Texas and Shrine Burns Institute).

    1985-1987: Studied sodium transport in the lung using the isolated perfused rat lung model. Studied morphological aspects of permeability and electrolyte transport in the lung with the goal of studying electrophysiological correlates of transport (UCLA).

    1981-1985: Studied pulmonary biology and pathobiology with particular emphasis on proliferative changes in lung cells after exposure to various inhaled particles as well as mechanisms by which changes occur. Studied unscheduled DNA synthesis in Type 2 lung cells in vitro. Studied the role of basal and non-ciliated cell proliferation in large airways. Developed a faster method of calculating labeling indices in tritiated thymidine labeled lung tissue sections (Lovelace Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute).

    1980-1981: Worked on the development of a primary tissue culture system for tracheal mucous cells. Characterized the system by both histochemical and biochemical methods. Designed and conducted experiments to study the effects of irritants on mucous cells in culture (Tufts University School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy).

    1976-1980: Studied long term morphological, histochemical, and cytokinetic changes after intratracheal instillations of benzo(a)pyrene, Polonium-210 alpha radiation and saline instillations as well as combinations thereof in the hamster lung; study damage and repair of a high dose of ozone in the hamster lung (Harvard University School of Public Health).

    1974-1975: Characterized the 3 dimensional location of the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei in the brain of the painted turtle (Chrysemes Picta) by histochemical methods using serial sections (Tufts University Department of Biology).

     

    TEACHING EXPERIENCE

    2000, spring: Web design and webmaster for NYU's Nelson Institute for Environmental Medicine graduate course in Toxicology at Washington Square: http://www.nyu.edu/classes/jaeger. Participate in tutorial on toxicity of vitamins, naturopathic remedies and hormetic factors.

    1988-1989: Taught microanatomy to first year medical students, pulmonary pathophysiology for fourth year medical students and staff, and lecture in Department of Medicine Lecture series.

    1981-1982: Leader of Seminar Series on Cell Toxicology at Lovelace Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute, Albuquerque, NM. Supervised summer students in research projects.

    1972-1973: Teaching Assistant in General Biology, Tufts University, Medford, MA. Including teaching introductory biology laboratory class and preparing materials for class lectures on plant physiology.
